Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of program is planned?
A: During your HOBY seminar experience, many dynamic leaders will volunteer their time to address numerous aspects of our changing world and the challenges future leaders will confront. The program is designed to develop an awareness of present and future issues by actively involving seminar participants in discussions and informal debate. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the discussion leaders throughout the weekend, which leads to a fuller understanding of topics presented. The program includes outstanding speakers, entertainment, and a special closing ceremony to which your parents are invited. You will help out a local charity on Saturday morning, as a part of HOBY’s commitment to “Leadership for Service.” You will be encouraged to join 14,000 other HOBY Ambassadors in making a difference in your school, community, place of worship, or other “environment” in which you see a need.

Q: Who pays for the seminar?
A:Your school or parent has paid a Registration Fee, and your parent(s) are responsible for transportation to and from the seminar. All costs for meals, lodging and training materials have been generously provided by sponsors throughout our state, including businesses, foundations, individuals, and service organizations wishing to support leadership education.

Q:Where will the seminar be held?
A:The seminar will take place at a college or university (see the Ambassador Info page for current year’s location).

Q:When will the seminar be held?
A:Seminar participants may register any time after 8:00 a.m. but before 9:30 a.m. on Fri. The North Carolina Leadership Seminar will conclude on Sun, at 3:00 p.m. You must be present for the entire weekend seminar, including overnight. (see the Ambassador Info page for current year’s dates).

Q:Where should I go when I arrive?
A:There will be signs posted to direct you. A HOBY volunteer committee member will greet you and check you in.

Q:What are the accommodations like?
A:Participants will be assigned to residence hall rooms with two participants of the same sex per room on floors reserved exclusively for the seminar. The air conditioning in the dorms can make the rooms extremely cold. Please be sure to bring a heavy blanket/comforter in addition to your linens and pillow. Everyone will receive nutritious breakfasts (no breakfast will be provided on Friday), lunches, and dinners. On the Student Confirmation Form, please indicate any special dietary considerations and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Q:What if I need to take medication while I am at the seminar?
A:Please provide information about your medication on the Medical History Records Form and bring a doctor’s note with you to the seminar. Make sure to read and comply with HOBY’s Policy for Use of Medication During a HOBY Event. Both documents are included in your Acceptance Confirmation packet.

Q:If necessary, how may I be contacted during the seminar?
A:Ambassadors are not allowed to carry cell phones with them during the day. In case of emergency, your parent(s) or guardian may call Director of Recruitment or Leadership Seminar Chair (see the Contact page for information). The seminar will be chaperoned by qualified male and female adults who will be staying at the facility 24 hours a day.

Q:What should I wear at the seminar?
A:Dress is casual throughout the weekend. You will need to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. You will be provided a HOBY t-shirt and there will be an announcement as to when you will wear the t-shirt during the weekend.

Q:What transportation arrangements have been made?
A:You are responsible for your transportation to and from the seminar. Please include all details of your itinerary on the enclosed Travel Itinerary for Students form.

Q:What if I am unable to attend the seminar?
A:If circumstances arise that prevent you from attending the entire seminar, including overnight, we would like to give another student the opportunity to attend. Please contact your guidance counselor immediately and follow up with a call to Director of Recruitment (see the Contact page for information) so that we may adjust our records and obtain an alternate student from your school to attend the seminar.

Q:Whom may I contact should I have additional questions?
A:Additional questions or concerns should be directed to the North Carolina HOBY West Leadership Seminar Chair  at [email protected] .
